Top Uses for Red Oak

It is no surprise that one of the most popular hardwoods used in manufacturing is red oak, (Quercus rubra, spp).  One reason is that in North American it is one of the most abundant hardwood species available and harvested throughout the Appalachian region.

In general, we find that Red Oak is used by manufacturers in nearly every application from cabinetry and flooring to millwork and furniture.

From our experience, here are a few of the top uses for red oak hardwood lumber.

Flooring – One of the most popular uses for red oak is flooring. Solid hardwood flooring and engineered hardwood flooring. The natural properties of red oak make it heavy, hard, sturdy and highly shock resistant. Excellent for flooring applications. It is also a common species request for the manufacturing of truck flooring for the same reasons.

Furniture – Red oak is consistently one of the top hardwoods used in furniture making due to its durability, easy working properties and stainability. You’ll see red oak used in mission style furniture and it is also popular in tables, dining room and bedroom furniture.

Architectural Joinery & Mouldings – Hardwood lumber is frequently used in architectural joinery & mouldings applications. And of course, the use of red oak is no exception due to its abundance and beauty.

Cabinets – Red oak has a long tradition of being used in cabinetry. Although its use varies based on current decor design styles, it has been often chosen because it is a durable hardwood and has a relatively moderate price point.

Doors – Red oak, and white oak for that matter, are a preferred choice for doors. Oak in general is often chosen for exterior door applications because of its strength, resistance to weather as well as its natural beauty.

Due to its vast growing region we carry red oak inventories in almost all of our hardwood sawmill locations.  All traditional NHLA grades as well as some proprietary grade hardwood lumber products are available in thicknesses ranging  from 4/4” to 12/4”, (some 16/4” availability exists).  Additional services such as surfacing and SLR2E or S4S can also be applied.
